The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) is an educational-initiative network set up to improve literacy and general education among underserved children and youth in Guatemala.
Some key points about the GLP:
- Founded in 1997, when Rotarians from Guatemalan clubs (Rotary Club of Guatemala Oeste and Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur) approached the U.S.-based nonprofit Cooperative for Education (CoEd) to develop literacy programs. The Guatemala Literacy Project+1
- It is structured as a network of many Rotary clubs and districts (both Guatemalan and international) plus the partner CoEd. The Guatemala Literacy Project+2Cooperative for Education+2
- The GLP has four main “pathways” or programmatic pillars:
- Spark (early-grade reading)
- Textbooks (support for middle schools)
- Technology / Computers (digital literacy and skills)
- Youth Development (scholarships, wrap-around support) The Guatemala Literacy Project+1
- It emphasises sustainability: for example, schools may collect a small fee to rent textbooks and thereby establish a fund for replacement/renewal over time. Rotary International+2Rotary District 6900+2
- To date, the GLP has reached many thousands of Guatemalan students. For example, one site notes over 312,000 students served. The Guatemala Literacy Project+1
