Compost As A Catalyst
Sarah Grover and Ataiyo Viafora joined our Zoom meeting to present the richness and value of composting.

Compost is more than a bucket of gold to make your garden grow. Composting involves thinking in terms of degeneration, sustainability, and rejuvenation. Sustainability is a bridge and the destination is regeneration. When soil has been regenerated it is restored, biodiversity grows, water and carbon are absorbed and healthy soil with healthy compost are part of the process.

Compost creates and maintains healthy soil. We participate in a natural cycle when we compost and get to be part of the rewards. It's an empowering process for individuals and community members to be a part of something that benefits so many and our planet.

Soil is alive! It needs air, food, and water, just like us. By choosing the compost process that is right for our garden, we can adapt it to what we need. Hot compost, permaculture, and mulch are three options proposed for our use. These methods will help us with our goals and plans of moving the garden forward. Compost requires care and time. When it's done right, it has an earthy scent and not one of garbage.

The possibility for a Community Garden Compost Club exists! It'll require action by us as a club and the community, including:
  • Observe, learn, care for it
  • Turn and water it
  • Monitor the contributions
  • Market & communicate
  • Contribute waste
The options are exciting and we can't wait to see what happens!
