The Rotary Club of Sedona Village Meeting Summary of May 23, 2019
Radiant Rob kicked off the meeting “early” with a big bell ring at 7:29!! The Rally Master reminded all of us “To Be The Inspiration,” R.I. President Barry Rassin’s theme for 2018/19, and that the Mission of Rotary is “Together we see the world where people unite and take action to create a lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.”

Greeter: Today Chuck Marr was the Greeter whose thought of the Day was “To remain the land of the free, we must be the land of the brave” in the Spirit of Memorial Day  coming up this weekend. Chuck  also introduced the following Visiting Rotarians, Jean Barton from Sedona RC, and two visiting Rotarians from the UK, Alan and Joan Marston from Southport England RC…soon to be achieving their Rotary Club’s 100thAnniversary! Reflective Rob was very happy to present our club banner to the Marston’s as our first International banner exchange. Other guests included: Ken Rouse, Kevin Adams, Peg and Ernie Schlictemeier, Richard Sidy, Mike Newcomb and Nicholas Hermen. These guests attended to receive the Rotary Club of Sedona Village 2019 Grants.

As a club we should be very proud, in our first year as a club to be able to present 3 scholarships at $1000 each and 8 Grant Awards at a total of $7500. Great job Charitable Fund Board of Directors, and all members who raised this $10,500 to give back to the community.

Program: Heather Mulcaire and Linda Buchanan presented an update on Yavapai College (YC)
Heather Mulcaire and Linda Buchanan presented an update on Yavapai College (YC), its outreach to the community and data on their student body. A most interesting presentation. YC also stands for “You Can” which is a theme used with students in counseling and mentoring programs at the college. There was a lot of data presented…I hope these are correct: The student body is composed of: 58% women, 77% commute, avg age is 32, 83% live in Yavapai County. One of the new attractions to students is the Viticulture and Enology department. The total student body is 4185, and 21% of classes are taken on line! This helps students who have to work to make ends meet, and still get their education beyond High School. Culinary and Nursing are two other big departments that students are heavily attending. In addition Linda outlined a new “Reimbursement Scholarship” called “The Promise” which pays the student for all out of pocket expenses associated with classes they take at YC, after they meet the requirements and graduate. They also mentioned a big Thank You to our own Chuck Marr for his facilitation regarding scholarships at YC.

Adjournment: Resilient Rob provided a “4 Way Test” certificate to both speakers along with their very own Rotary Tape measure. He also thanked the Grant Awardees for joining the meeting and staying for the program. We adjourned early…..around 8:20 to a clanging bell and lots of conversation and socialization!
