The Impact of Arizona Corporation Commission

The impact of Arizona's Corporation Commission
Rotarian Bob Burns Discusses the Arizona Corporation Commission
Rotarian Bob Burns presented an enlightening program titled "Arizona Corporation Commission and Your Pocketbook" to members of the Village Rotary Club. Burns, a former elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission, shared insights into the significant role the Commission plays in the state's governance and its impact on residents.
Burns described the Arizona Corporation Commission as, essentially, the "fourth branch" of Arizona’s state government. Its quasi-judicial authority oversees critical divisions, including Utilities, Railroads & Pipelines, Corporations, and Securities. The Commission’s primary responsibilities involve regulating utility companies and approving rate requests, ensuring fair and equitable services for Arizona residents.
Composed of five commissioners elected statewide on a partisan basis, the Commission is authorized to employ up to 300 staff members to support its diverse oversight functions. Burns emphasized the Commission's unique role in balancing the interests of consumers and businesses, as well as its influence on the economic landscape of Arizona.
The presentation offered Rotary members valuable insights into the complexities of the Commission's operations and its far-reaching effects on Arizonans’ daily lives.
