Nancy Steele and Kegn Moorcroft joined us to share important information about the Verde River Watershed. The Watershed covers over 6,600 acres of land, is 1/6 the size of Arizona, and includes Oak Creek. The Watershed is home to the only wild and scenic rivers in all of Arizona. Primarily spring fed, it bubbles up and creates creeks in different areas along the Watershed. It creates opportunities we all are able to enjoy including boating, kayaking, birding, and fishing. However, the Verde River is in danger of running dry. Flow is declining and has been over the last 30 years. Wells have increased from 1950-2015 by 3856%! Drought is at an exceptional level and invasive species are everywhere. Friends of the Verde River have opportunities for community engagement and everyone is encouraged to get involved. Help with identifying animals, plants, gullies, invasive species, and more.
